This Liege Waffles recipe is a traditional Belgian treat. The waffles have a caramelized crunch because the dough is enriched with butter and pearl sugar. For a decadent dessert, top the waffles with juicy cherries and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

  • Cook Time: 15 minutes
  • Total Time: 45 minutes

Instructions

  • Whisk together the flour and granulated sugar in a large mixing bowl.
  • Mix the active dry yeast with the lukewarm water in a small mixing bowl for 5 minutes, or until foamy.
  • Mix in the beaten eggs and vanilla extract in a large mixing bowl.
  • Stir the yeast mixture into the large mixing bowl until well combined.
  • To the mixing bowl, add the softened butter and mix until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Fold in the pitted cherries and pearl sugar.
  • Cover the mixing bowl with a damp cloth and set aside for 1 hour to rest at room temperature.
  • Preheat a waffle maker.
  • Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown, with 1/3 cup of the dough on the waffle iron.
  • Repeat with the rest of the dough.
  • Warm waffles should be served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and extra cherries on top.
